Waswanipi Youth Gala

Friday, September 16th, 2011 was Wawanipi's annual Youth Gala. This is a serious event that is planned for months. Hosted by the Youth Council and held this year at the Youth Centre, the Gala was a big success. Youth Fusion helped out by being judges this year. Astrid and Skye along with Robin (the grade 6 teacher at the Elementary School) did the rounds at the Gala looking at the gorgeous dresses, smashing suits, hair, accessories and fine moves on the dance floor. Fun was had by all!

Birthday Party

Last week was Youth Fusion's Leadership Coordinator, Astrid's BIRTHDAY! Instead of our regular healthy cooking on Wednesdays we decided to throw a birthday party and bake a cake. It was a healthy blueberry oatmeal cake. Super easy to make and delicious! Check out the recipe below and some pictures from the party. One of Astrid's gifts was a red Waswanipi hat.

Blueberry Oatmeal Cake
  • 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup quick-cooking oat, uncooked
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
 Directions:
1. Add the flour, oats, baking powder, salt, egg, sugar, milk, and oil to a mixing bowl; stir to mix.
2. Fold in the blueberries.
3. Spread batter into lightly greased 8x8 inch baking pan.
4. Bake in a 400° oven for 20-25 minutes or until pick comes out clean.

Radio Show: Waswanipi Pride

The first radio show of the Fall season was all about the love and pride of Waswanipi. The hour brought some thoughts from students at WJHMS, as well as some song requests such as this one from local rapper D-Russ. Take a listen!

Photo Club, Hiking & Blueberries oh my

This week Youth Fusion was back with its first set of after school activities. It was fun-filled and action-packed. Photography club went hiking and picked buckets of blueberries on the trails around Waswanipi. Then the next day Bonnie was back to give us a healthy cooking class with the blueberries. We made delicious muffins and smoothies.
