Diabetes Walk

With Diabetes Month in full swing, both schools (staff and students) teamed up and took to the streets to promote awareness in the community around healthy eating and exercise to prevent diabetes. A big thank you to Bonnie Leung, Waswanipi's nutritionist and dietitian, for organizing the event.

Map Making Project

Over the past month Secondary 5 English students have been working on making maps of Waswanipi. As part of their geography class the students were challenged to think visually on a large scale, learn about cartography and spatial drawing, and add their own knowledge of the town to their map. Having a large map provided from the Band Office to work from, students made sketches to plan out their maps. From there they produced their own large scale maps incorporating many shortcuts, trails and land marks that were missing on the government issued map. Here are a couple of pictures of student working as well as some of the finished products.

Hallowe'en Haunted House

The student council of WJHMS began preparations for a Hallowe'en Haunted House on the weekend prior to Halloween. Mazes were constructed, streamers were hung and smoke machines were strategically placed in order to transform the Waswanipi Youth Center into a terrifying haunted hallway.

The haunted house, open one night only on October 31st, was a huge success, with over 300 people screaming their way through our house of terror. Some were even too scared to enter once the strobe lights were on accompanied by chainsaws and demonic soundtracks. Great job student council members! And thanks for all the hard work from all the other student volunteers and the Youth Centre staff!

Zombies!!!!!!

Everyone loves a terrifying zombie at Halloween time so Skye and Astrid decided to teach students a zombie dance that they could perform for Halloween. Check out these scary zombies!

First learning to do the zombie walk...

Then on Hallowe'en in character

Community Hallowe'en Party

Youth Fusion helped with the Waswanipi Community Hallowe'en Party that was held at the Youth Centre on Saturday night. Asked by the Youth Council to be the costume judges Astrid and Skye joined Grade 6 teacher, Robin, and frantically put together costumes to wear. Then they all spent the evening judging some amazing costumes worn by party goers. It was difficult to decide some of the winners - the effort people put by some was outstanding. Our favorite game of the evening was trying to figure out who was behind some of the masks.

Also at the Community Party was a pumpkin carving contest. Youth Fusion coordinators entered and received the winning number of votes in the adult category. They were excited to say the least and were very pleased with their appropriately themed wolf blanket prize!

Horror Movie Night

With Student Council now set up the group kicked off their organizing efforts with a fright-filled weekend. Friday night was horror movie night. Over 150 youth from the community came and screamed their heads off at the terrifying film.
